SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS GAME BY GAME REVIEW
Twenty twenty four – the quest for six with a settled quarterback room, new coaching staff and new rookie personnel. I aim to provide pre-game expectations and post-game evaluations. Thoughts. Observations. Analysis. The believable and the unbelievable. Post-game mental health can be severely hot and cold therefore sleeping on a result may provide further clarity down the road. Live long and 49ers!
jets @ 49ers - 10 SEPTEMBER - 19-32 - W
Pregame Expectation
Monday Night Football may provide the red and gold with additional time for player availability. A freakish number of nagging injuries to starting personnel throughout the offseason juncture has curtailed preparations for the season ahead. The third and final preseason game has also gifted Leonard Floyd and Yetur Gross-Matos with MRIs after sustaining suspected knee sprains. Opening gameday lottery will be at play therefore we could be in for a very close game or a bevy of field goals. Leonard Floyd will be raring to make a contribution however Yetur Gross-Matos is set to miss out. Trent Williams and Brandon Aiyuk will be available with new contacts in-hand before the business of the season commences against the visiting Jets.
Postgame Evaluation
The red and gold defense stifled both Aaron Rodgers and Breece Hall for the entirety of the contest. Jordan Mason exhumed the next-man-up philosophy and Jake Moody’s clutch right leg concluded the opening week with a victory against old friends on the field and the sideline. Thankfully without the need for digging deep into the playbook, overexerting the squad or unruly use of Christian McCaffrey. The Nick Bosa affect: Leonard Floyd’s health and future wealth could marry up with statistically his greatest season in the NFL.
49ers @ vikings - 15 SEPTEMBER - 17-23 - L
Pregame Expectation
Jordan Mason will fill in for Christian McCaffrey for the foreseeable future with the untimely injured reserve designation for the star offensive juggernaut. Friendly foe, Samuel Richard Darnold and superstar Justin Jefferson will provide an intriguing matchup for Nick Bosa and the 49ers defense for the trip to US Bank Stadium. The Niners defensive backs will have to be on high alert on every single snap thanks to the stud receiver’s profound repertoire and the deep ball ability of the oppositions quarterback. We could be in for a one-sided blowout or a back-and-forth frenzy till the very last snap.
Postgame Evaluation
The Minesota Vikings out-skilled, out-hustled and out-muscled the Niners from sideline to sideline and frankly it was never close or a contest. The offense huffed and puffed and the dense blew it all away. Greater challenges lie ahead, the red and gold’s form and fashion need to drastically improve, drastically fast.
49ers @ la rams - 22 SEPTEMBER - 24-27 - L
Pregame Expectation
The traveling Niners are overwhelming favourites against a LA Rams team in the midst of a roster rebuild and a growing list of injuries to boot. The faithful will do their part off the field by filling up Sofi stadium to power home an away team victory.
Postgame Evaluation
Don’t let your opponent hang around. Finish them off or you can and will pay, and oh boy did the red and gold pay, dearly. The 49ers were in so much control, it was not a contest and at the half you wouldn’t believe the reg and gold would end up losing or throwing away the victory depending on who you’d ask.
patriots @ 49ers - 29 septEmbeR - 13-30 - w
Pregame Expectation
The season is on already on-the-line according to the usual naysayers, dooms day squad and the like. I have faith San Francisco will eventually turn it around, a wounded Niners is a bashfully dangerous animal, the National Football League will testify. We have lived through this before. New England will provide a tic for tac challenge and opportunity in patriotic fashion.
Postgame Evaluation
The Niners completely dismantled the Patriots gameplan by stuffing the run and forcing New England to throw the ball. The Niners defensive line and Fred Warner directed all recent misgivings on the away team and feasted for the entirety of the contest. The standout contributions from rotational players and rookie personnel are a surprising bonus for the Niners going forward.
49ers @ arizona cardinals - 06 octobeR - 23-24 - l
Pregame Expectation
A divisional contest and blistering heatwave will be on the menu for Arizona’s trip to Levis Stadium. The face-off will ultimately boil down to the San Francisco’s defense verses Arizona’s Kyler Murry – Déjà vu and whoever gets the upper hand on the day will be miraging toward game, set and match. Recent results have opened the door for the red and gold to regain control of the division and inevitable march for the conference.
Postgame Evaluation
Any given Sunday did not disappoint with the finale coming down to a walk off Chad Ryland field goal. Jake Moody was forced out of the game early in the second half taking down the Cardinals kick returner and thus forcing the Niners to operate without a recognised kicker. Mitch Wishnowsky duly stepped in to replace stricken kicker. The 49ers were in total command and were punished for letting the opposition hang around enough to steal a deserved victory.
seahawks @ 49ers - 11 octobeR - 24-36 - w
Pregame Expectation
Thursday night football will be bringing perineal rivals to Santa Clara shortly after a devastating loss against fellow divisional opponents Arizona. Surprisingly I believe the Niners are on the cusp of must win territory heading into week six of the season. The Seahawks will force the red and gold to battle on all fronts as Geno Smith and company have shown plenty of fight thus far.
Postgame Evaluation
Total command at the half to almost critical meltdown in the third quarter nearly cost the Niners a much-needed victory. The offense failed to ice the game allowing the Seahawks to wrestle back in the second half. The lack of killer instinct across all three phases of the game could cost the Niners qualification for the business end of the season.
chiefs @ 49ers - 11 octobeR - 24-18 - l
Pregame Expectation
The undefeated team are necessarily not odds on in Santa Clara, thanks to historically patchy form of superstar Patrick Mahomes and Chiefs beleaguered offense. The 49ers will have an opportune opportunity to right some wrongs and bury ghosts from the recent past. The pressure is squarely on the home team to sap a losing skid and turnaround the season ahead.
Postgame Evaluation
The Niners offense completely failed resulting in Brock Purdy’s worst performance of his young career. Lessons learned or a rite of passage, call it what you may. The talented quarterback will benefit mightily from the experience. Injuries may well catch up with San Francisco as Brandon Aiyuk may miss the season with suspected ACL and MCL injuries.
49ers @ cowboys - 28 octobeR - 30-24 - w
Pregame Expectation
Don’t call it a rivalry. It’s not been a contest in the Shanahan era. The red and black will have to quickly regroup and fight the good fight heading into the bye week and without the availability of Brandon Aiyuk, Juan Jennings and a banged up Deebo Samuels.
Postgame Evaluation
Brock Purdy and the boys were back in form against a competitive Cowboys team on the day. The offense was vastly improved, and the defense did enough to curtail Dak Prescott and company. Going forward Christian Mccaffrey will be on hand to kickstart the Niners into the business end of the season.
49ers @ tampa - 10 novembeR - 20-23 - w
Pregame Expectation
The bye week has afforded an opportunity for a few players on the cusp to return on the field. Dre Greenlaw is a few weeks away and Christan Mccaffrey will make his long-awaited season debut albeit on a snap count. Tampa will provide plenty of unpredictability across the offense and defense at Raymond James Stadium. The Buccaneers are relying on third and fourth string at receiver positions.
Postgame Evaluation
The 49ers struggled to ice the game with inconsistencies on the offense and atrocious special teams play including missing three field goals. The Niners assisted Tampa’s game tying drive with a plethora of penalties keeping the Buccaneers run happy offense on the field. I have no idea why the Niners defense struggled to stop the run because Tampa had no pass game outside quick trigger short attempts.
49ers @ seahawks - 17 novembeR
Pregame Expectation
To gain a semblance of control in the NFC West, the Niners need to defeat an improving Seahawks. The visitors will provide a tough matchup across all three phases. San Francisco has to cleanup special teams’ miscues and the offense will have to manage to ice the game sooner rather than later.
