OFF-SEASON-NOISE-ON

Brock Purdy has legitimately justified the accolades and plaudits for his work on and off the field. The pressure and culpability of playing as a stand-in starting quarterback did not overwhelm the rookie. Brock swam, swimmingly when most experts alike thought he’d sink, quickly. The injury plague is a curse, a phenomenon the franchise and fandom have lived through many times over. Adversity can dismantle or fuel you and we can only hope the Brock we witnessed grow and improve over the course of the season will be back, stronger and better than before.

National media and fandom experts justifiably harp on about Brock’s accomplishments but at the expense of overlooking or skipping context entirely and for whatever reason, the downfall of Trey Lance. The naysayers consistently compare the two quarterbacks and fail to stipulate the team Brock inherited is night and day in comparison. Trey’s team and coaching staff were freshly installed, barley got the feet wet and battled a biblical flood and lost. Not even Mr 12, the goat of all goats could have built an ark against Chicago.

Brock’s team was in form on both sides of the ball with a healthy trio of Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel and George Kittle coupled with a settled coaching staff and all-world defense. The team was on the road to 12 consecutive wins thanks in part to the play of Jimmy Garoppolo and company. I’m confident in the same scenario, Trey Lance could perform accordingly and like Brock, improve with every game. The individual stats may well differ because they are different quarterbacks with differing skills and traits.

The future is bright. In Trey Lance and Brock Purdy, we must trust. Too much focus is focused on picking sides or endlessly debating statistical differentials. It is stupendous to have both onboard; to compete, improve each other and the team. Trey has accumulated positive moments along with rookie rites of passage. The experience was momentary compared to the lasting opportunity for Brock who grabbed the opening with both hands along with rookie junctures of trial by fire. Jimmy and Brock seemingly get a media and fandom pass however Trey Lance gets all the flack. Why do football people have different rules for different quarterbacks?
