NFL DRAFT 2023

DAY ONE – NO PICKS

Draft trades galore. You couldn’t script the manoeuvring. I somehow managed to stay awake (United Kingdom) and watched the entire event even though the happenstance of 49ers trading up to round one was none to nil. The set design and the draftee walkthrough area were a marked improvement in comparison to last year’s unfavourable effort. The 2021 set design remains my favourite and has nothing to do with the acquisition of Trey Lance.

DAY TWO – WE HAVE PICKS AND WE HAVE A KICKER

The status-quo, over-emotional-reaction from the fanbase was to be expected. I for one love the third-round selection for a potential unicorn at kicker. The three selections are a team-need and a team-fit with regards to short-term depth and long-term coachable abilities. Ji’Ayir Brown lives on instincts and was born for the secondary. Jake Moody can really boot a Prolate Spheroid shaped football and Cameron Latu is new to the position but has boundless ability to grow.

DAY THREE – 6 PICKS

Analysts and select members of the fandom would align with the notion: the 49ers do their best work on day three. Media and fandom fallout: short term judgments based on emotions or long-term realisations based on the field of play? Trust the coaching staff and trust the process. Darrell Luter, Robert Beal and Dee Winters are projected as solid depth pieces for now and potentially down the road as day three daylight robberies.

UNDRAFTED ROOKIES – 11 SELECTIONS

San Francisco is a great destination for UDFA to improve and increase NFL opportunities. The 49ers have a reputation for developing and affording opportunities for undrafted rookies. Jack Colletto and Joey Fisher are clear favourites to make the 53. Isaiah Winstead’s social media campaign could net the 49ers the find of the season. Isaiah faces an uphill task to make the first team squad however I am confident the rookie receiver will turn heads and lumps to represent the team in some shape or form.
